Silat Sunda Institute

PROLOGUE

December 12, 2019 was a historic day for Indonesia because the art-tradition of Pencak Silat was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural World Heritage.

However, until this recognition was realized, literacy and in-depth research on various aspects of the art tradition, history, and body mechanics science of Pencak Silat were very minimal. The wealth of data is scattered in various physical forms that are vulnerable to being destroyed by time.

The wealth of data, as well as the depth of literacy and research, are very important as a strong foundation structure for the ideals of development, popularity, and dissemination of the original Indonesian martial arts to the international arena; towards Indonesia as the center of the world’s Pencak Silat martial arts.

The institution is called
Silat Sunda Institute,
which is an association of people who are interested in the martial art, culture, and tradition of Pencak Silat, a native Indonesian art form.

Vision

The institution aims to be a research-based institute of martial art, culture, and tradition of Pencak Silat that is excellent and able to bridge the traditional silat to the modern era. It also strives to preserve the national culture, especially the art of Pencak Silat, by establishing a school of art and culture.

Mission

The institution has several missions, such as forming literate, wise, intelligent, creative, critical, cooperative,
and responsible silat practitioners; providing quality education and activities on the art, culture, and martial science of Pencak Silat; becoming a transmission bridge that brings the traditional martial art of Pencak Silat to the 21st century.

About Roedy Wiranatakusumah

Learning Pencak Silat since the age of 8, Roedy M. Wiranatakusumah is the descendant of the Founding Father of Bandung City, R.A. Wiranatakusumah II, and the grandson of the founder of Kostrad (Strategic Reserve Command of the Indonesian Army), Lt. Gen. Achmad Wiranatakusumah. Roedy is also the Founder of Silat Sunda Institute, the Chairman of Pencak Silat Indonesia Institute, Vice Chairman of IPSI (Ikatan Pencak Silat Indonesia) West Java for Foreign Relations, and the Principal of the SSI Maen Po system.

About Robby Maulana Zulkarnaen

Having studied Karate and Pencak Silat since a young age, Robby Maulana Zulkarnaen is the Founder of Paguyuban Sundawani Wirabuana, a cultural-based community organization.

In addition, Robby is a cultural enthusiast and lecturer at Pasundan University in Bandung. He serves as a mentor for the Association of Sons/Daughters of the Army (Putra/Putri AD) in West Java, a member of the Expert Council of ICMI (Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association), and a member of the Association of Tourism Villages.
